How to write an appendix with an example.
First thing first, what is an appendix? It is extra information or raw data that is provided at the end of the research paper after the reference page. The information contained in the appendix is meant to offer more about what is included in the main paper as a way of enabling the reader to have a deeper understanding of the paper. Sometimes it is the teacher of the professors who require that the students include the appendix at the end of the paper as a way of giving more insight about the topic being discussed on the paper.
How important is appendix?
The fact that it is placed at the end of the paper gives the idea that it is not that important. But that is not the case. Appendix bears a lot of importance when it comes to a deep understanding of the topic of the discussion. It is only that not all people are interested in the appendix and that is why it is not part of the main body of the paper. Otherwise, some people would find it disturbing or irrelevant thus making the work to look more complex than it is which would not be good. That is why it is included at the end such that, those that would wish to have a look at it can do that while those that don’t want they can just go through the main body of the paper.
But it is important to note that even if appendix comes at the end and most of the time very few read it that one can include just any kind of information. Absolutely not. The appendix should and must be related to what was being discussed in the main body. There must be a connection between the Appendix and the topic of discussion.
General content of the Appendix.
- Texts or paragraphs that offer extra information on what was discussed in the body part of the paper.
- Graphs and charts related to the topic of discussion.
- Drawings and maps that goes hand in hand with the topic of discussion.
- Links to websites where the reader can get more information about the topic of discussion.
- Photographs and illustrations related to the issue discussed in the paper.
Structure and format of a text or paragraph appendix.
There are various styles of writing an appendix, but in this case, we will look at the appendix that appears in the form of paragraphs. Below, are a number of the things, which one should consider when writing such kind of an appendix;
- The section SHOULD start with the title Appendix or Appendices if they are many. It should be centered and bolded at the top of the page.
- Each entry MUST then be titled Appendix A, Appendix B, Appendix C and so on depending on the number of appendices there is. These headings should be centered but not bolded. They can also be capitalized or be written in title case.
- Each entry SHOULD then have a heading that is written in a normal case and indented.
- After the heading, a paragraph with the raw data follows. BUT it is not indented.
- The next step is writing the second paragraph. It MUST be indented.
- If the information provided is gotten from secondary sources, proper in-text citation MUST be done with a corresponding reference entry in the reference page.
- Where there are more than one appendices, each appendix SHOULD appear on its own page.
- In case the paper has a table of content it SHOULD include the section with appendices.
Example of an Appendix on a topic of UN and its impact on the world.
Appendices.
Appendix A.
The 17 sustainable development goals of the United Nations formulated in 2015 summit.
In 2015, all the United Nations Member States came up with the 17 sustainable goals that should be achieved by the year 2030. These goals are meant to transform the world positively from all sectors such as technology, health, education, environment, politics, peace, and many others. Countries that are members of the UN are required to take part in accomplishing these goals because they determine the future of the world.
The goals include; no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, responsible consumption, climate action, aquatic life, life on land, peace and justice and lastly partnership.
Note the following from the example:
- The page has a heading Appendices that is bolded and centered, it shows that there will be more than one Appendix although in the example only one Appendix is shown.
- The title “Appendix A” follows and it is centered with a normal case.
- Next, the heading of the appendix “The 17 sustainable development goals of United Nations formulated in 2015 summit.” Follows and it is indented.
- The first paragraph is not indented.
