Biomass

Source Material for biofuels can be manufactured from a wide range of materials

including crop waste, manure, municipal solid waste (MSW) and other byproducts,

making it an efficient step in recycling.

Find information on biomass production from municipal solid waste (MSW) in United

States and briefly discuss the actual use and potential of this source for biomass

Wind Energy Potential

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has a map showing the wind resource

potential for the United States, which can be found at

http://apps2.eere.energy.gov/wind/windexchange/windmaps/resource_potential.asp

Based on your interpretation from the photo, answer the following questions:

1. Looking at this map, would you say the United States has abundant wind

energy resources?

2. Where are the most significant wind resources located?

3. Are these areas heavily populated?

4. Research on what parts of the nation are currently taking advantage of these

wind resources. Briefly explain.

5. Are there similar resources available in the area where you live?

Exercise:

Individually or in a small group of two; research the web (or other resources) to obtain examples of a good Pitch for a product or service. These usually will be found associated with a crowdfunding site or something like Shark Tank or Gruen (an ABC Program).

Present your findings in an academic format (1,000 words) online as to why you made these decisions. As an entrepreneur what do you have to do to achieve a successful pitch in a recessional economic environment.

Communication skills (writing style, spelling, grammar, presentation)

Marks are awarded for clear, direct writing with no spelling or grammatical errors. Avoid slang and colloquialisms unless they are a direct quote. Paragraphs should be longer than one sentence except in very special circumstances, and should deal with only one theme or point.

The assignment is a report in the form of a short essay.

3

Critical discussion

Demonstrate your scholarship by inquiry, discussing the aspects of the entrepreneurial pitch. Convince the reader and the tutorial class that you understand the principles behind good and bad pitches.

5

Analysis and argument development

A good argument and analysis is built by clearly stating the assertion or ‘answer’ you are providing in the essay, then clearly and logically proving your argument with a series of well-thought out points based upon evidence (not everything you know about a certain subject). These points should be linked to each other and make sense. Finally, provide a conclusion that does not introduce any new evidence or points, but wraps up the argument and strongly emphasises the key assertion or answer that you set out to make. The plan or structure of your essay should be easy to see.

8

Originality

You are expected to use your own words in the main but always reference others’ works when you directly quote from them OR paraphrase them (put it in your own words) OR use their ideas and/or evidence. Original thinking in an essay or presentation can be demonstrated by making links or connections between ideas or points that have not been made before; using evidence or kinds of evidence to make an argument that have not been used before; thinking about the question in a new or unusual way.

You will develop two storyboards for either a TVC or social video based on the skills and knowledge you have developed in this unit. The storyboards should present two creative approaches that present two different ‘big ideas’ that are capable of solving the brief. You are required to use the five frame storyboard layout shown in learning materials for both. You can find it here.
You will sketch out the visual components of both advertisements. NB: This is not a drawing competition – stick figures are okay. What matters is your ability to develop two distinctive and cohesive narratives in a visual and written storyboard format that presents a creative and strategically focused response to the brief.
The captions for each frame must be typed, they cannot be handwritten.
Part C: Creative rationales
Provide a written justification for why the two concepts (storyboards) could be considered creative responses that achieve the desired audience response.
Part D: Creative process description
You will describe your creative process by citing ideas and concepts covered in learning materials and discuss how they or other sources of inspiration influenced your development of the two creative responses. You should use relevant theories, models or approaches to reflect on your process, quotes from practitioners included in learning materials that have inspired your creative responses, and discuss the challenges you experienced and overcome during this process.
