Understanding the theoretical foundations, influential theorists, and demarcation of the three major movements of psychology is essential to having a fundamental knowledge of the discipline. Psychoanalysis; behaviourism; and humanistic, transpersonal, and existential psychology (HTE) are recognized as the three primary movements of psychology. As such, they provide a rich history of human science and form the basis for understanding human experience and the human condition as a whole. In this assignment, you will address this history, synthesize the theories, and consider applications of the theories.
General Requirements:
- To foster retention of foundational theories in psychology, this assignment requires the incorporation of information from this course and previous courses regarding psychological theories and their applications. Refer to PSY-802, Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Theory and PSY-803, Behaviourism to assist with this assignment.
- This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
- Doctoral learners are required to use APA style for their writing assignments. The APA Style Guide is located in the Student Success Centre.
- This assignment requires that at least ten scholarly research sources related to this topic, and at least one in-text citation from each source be included. Scholarly works encountered in prior doctoral courses may be used in this assignment.
- You are required to submit this assignment to Lopes Write. Refer to the directions in the Student Success Centre.
Directions:
Write a paper (2,250-2,500 words) that demonstrates your understanding of the primary movements in psychology – psychoanalysis, behaviourism, and humanistic, transpersonal, and existential psychology (HTE). Your paper should provide a historical perspective for each of the movements, showcase your understanding of the key components of each, and suggest a synthesis and application of the theories. Include the following in your paper:
- An overall historical context of all three movements. (Benchmarks C.1.1: Discuss the history and development of the theories of Psychoanalysis, Behaviourism, and Humanistic/Transpersonal/Existential (HTE) Psychology)
- A rationale for why each movement is/was considered essential to understanding human behaviour and experiences.
- An analysis of psychoanalysis/psychodynamic theory. What were the primary tenets and perspectives of the theories? Who were the key theorists? How did their work lead them to new ideas including Neo-Freudianism?
- An analysis of behaviourism. What were the theoretical underpinnings of the movement? What were the primary tenets and concepts of the movement? Why were these tenets and concepts important? Who were the key theorists?
- An analysis of humanistic, transpersonal, and existential psychology (HTE). From what cultural and historical contexts did the movement emerge? What were the primary tenets and concepts of the movement? Why were these tenets and concepts important? How do these tenets and concepts differ across the movement? Who were the key theorists?
- A synthesis of these movements. How did these movements enhance the understanding of human behaviour, growth, and potential? (Benchmarks C.1.2: Synthesize the theories of Psychoanalysis, Behaviourism, and HTE Psychology)
- An evaluation of the applications of the theories that were the basis for each of these movements. To what extent has the application of these theories enhanced treatments in mental health and the helping professions? (Benchmarks C.1.3: Evaluate the common applications of Psychoanalysis, Behaviourism, and HTE Psychology)
- A statement of next steps. What comes next in the development of psychological approaches to understanding human behaviour and experience

Choose a topic that you think the most important/ interesting to be studied/ discussed in
childhood and adolescence (younger than 18 years old). Find 3-4 peer-reviewed articles of the
topic you chose in the Specify, PsycARTICLES and/or Psychological and Behavioural Sciences
Collection databases*. These articles need to be peer-reviewed articles (they cannot be from the
website, Psychology Today, or a book review). If you have minimum 3 peer-reviewed articles,
you may use additional resources (do not have to be a peer-review article) if you like. Then
provide comprehensive discussions on following questions:
1) Choose a topic that you think the most important/ interesting to be studied/ discussed in
childhood and adolescence. Discuss the reasons why you choose the topic (provide
introductions for the presentation).
2) Summarize articles with your own words (e.g., overview of the article, the methods,
participants/subjects information, and the results of the study). Discuss some key findings
from each article.
3) Analyse the topic with appropriate developmental theories (e.g., Erikson, Piaget,
Lifespan theory, behavioural theory, etc.) from the text. Employing the theory, you chose,
explain why the topic you chose affects development of people in the age group you
selected.
4) Develop an action plan (i.e., prevention/ intervention programs/ ideas for the topic you
chose). Based on information you obtained from 3-4 peer-reviewed articles AND the text
that are used for this class, design an action plan of how we can prevent or intervene with
the topic you chose for a specific individual or group (or promote benefits if your topic
focus on the positive outcomes). Develop specific plans which you could currently carry
out, in your own life, given the resources you currently have. Or if applicable, discuss
how the society can support your plans.
You will create a PowerPoint presentation discussing the Barnum Effect. For this presentation option, you will integrate scholarly research on the Barnum Effect with a mini-experiment that you will conduct on friends and family.
- Collect data from 5 people on the Barnum Effect by giving them the test found at the following website: http://psych.fullerton.edu/mbirnbaum/web/personalityB.htm.
- Next, ask your participants to rate the accuracy of their results on a scale of 1 to 10
(1 = not accurate at all; 10 = completely accurate). - Record the participants’ ratings/results and include them as part of your presentation.
- Once you have told the participants their results, you may also include follow-up questions to obtain qualitative data on their reaction to the accuracy of the test or the Barnum Effect. Feel free to include those qualitative data in your presentation as well.
- Integrate the data you collected from your 5 participants with the scholarly research that you found on the Barnum Effect into a single, well-organized presentation.
- Be sure to include at least 1 peer-reviewed resource, in addition to your textbook. (That’s at least 2 scholarly sources total!) Discuss whether or not your findings are consistent with the scholarly sources that you cite. If not, offer an explanation of why.
Be sure to carefully review the Grading Rubric posted in the Assignment Instructions folder so that you know exactly what is expected of you when completing this assignment.
•Be clear and positive Statements must be comprehensively supported by the data/analyses presented •Never introduce new material in the discussion• The discussion should be the logical culmination of all of the preceding work There should be no surprises

Respond to one of the following:
• Discuss the political landscape of the Restoration and the eighteenth century. (You may mention the rise of the modern parliamentary system, the addition of a Prime Minister, and the major differences between the Tories and the Whigs.) How was the English system of government during the 18th century similar to or different from today’s political climate in either England or the United States?
• Swift is famous for his use of satire. Satire works on at least three levels. One is the surface level, the literal level, in which the reader takes the author at “face value.” The second level is where the reader has an “aha” reaction. This occurs when the reader understands that the author does not mean what is written literally; in fact, the author means just the opposite (sarcasm often works on this level). Third is the metaphoric level. Here the reader realizes what the author does mean what was said on the surface level but not literally. At what point in “A Modest Proposal” did you have an “aha” reaction? How does this essay work on all three levels?
• A mock epic is a long, humorous narrative poem that treats a trivial subject in the grand elevated style of a true epic such as Paradise Lost. What is Pope mocking in The Rape of the Lock? What does he borrow from other epics to achieve his purpose? Is he successful in making his point? Why or why not?
• Which of the poems from the debate about women was the most convincing, or which was your favourite? Why? Be specific.
