Learning is not that easy especially if you are not doing it the right way. You may have a frustrating time on campus because of doing a lot in relation to academic work yet your GPA is at the bottom. Sometimes the reason why students fail is not by not working hard but rather by using studying styles that do not suit them. There are seven studying styles that one can choose in order to succeed academically in the university.
Visual.
This style of learning involves using visual things such as paintings, pictures drawings and most importantly mind maps. If this is your stronghold, you will easily remember content that you studied if it was represented in a visual manner. For a college student, the most relevant visual tool to use would be a mind map. It involves using circles and arrows on a piece of paper to represent what you have learned. Minds maps have been tried and are very effective because they enable one to have a deep understanding of the content learn while the image is retained in the mind for a long period of time.
Aural.
It is a style that has a lot to do with music and beatings. Students that have it as their major style will understand the content if it is presented in the form of music or a song. These are the kind of students who will study effectively in a room with background music. Am sure you have ever seen them if you are not one of them because they are easy to identify in a group of students. For example, in the library, you will see them with earphones. If you are in this category of students, then consider studying with background music.
Verbal.
It is a style where students understand the concepts taught most if it is delivered to them in the form of a speech. They may also understand when they read on their own but that would not be as effective as when it is a speech. If you happen to fall in this category, make sure you don’t miss lecturers. It is because during lectures is when you will understand more of what you learning as opposed to when you go to read on your own. Students that use this style are easy to identify because you will never see them in the library but when it comes to exams they are always ahead.
Logical.
This style of learning involves the student understanding the reasons or principals behind the given content in order to understand it. A student must understand the route or foundation of a given skill or concept for the concept to remain in their head. Most of the mathematicians and engineers fall into this category. Logical students are able to understand what they are being taught or reading if they get the big picture. So in case you are one of such student you need to consider reasoning in your mode of study.
Physical.
It involves doing the practice of what you learn in class or on your own for it to stick in the mind. Students that use this style are considered to be outgoing and love working with their hands. It is also worth noting that some of the students that love drawing diagrams in relation to what they learn in class also may fall in this category. If you fall under this style, you need to try and do what you learn in class physically.
Solitary.
Solitary learners are able to understand what they read if they are in a quiet place. They prefer reading on their own with a minimum level of disruption. These are the kinds of students that you will see them in the library always because there is no noise. And when they are in hostels or home they prefer studying in the middle of the night when there is no noise. If you are one of them then you need to ‘marry’ the library because that is where you will optimally understand the concept that you read.
Social.
This style is opposite to solitary. Students that use this style are able to understand concepts more when the share with other students. They prefer group study because there they are able to learn more effectively. They share ideas with each other verbally and that is why you will really see them seated in-class reading. They are always in sports and other extra-curricular activities. A student that falls in under this style should consider creating a study group with other students where they can be discussing various concepts.
