Write down your long term goals.
It refers to the academic achievement that you want to achieve on the campus. For example, you could write down that your goal is to graduate with an A and then go on to pursue masters and later Ph.D. Writing the long term goal will ensure that you stay on track on what you want to achieve. The long term goal is more of a vision that will keep you moving.
Break the long-term goals into short-term goals.
Don’t just say that you want to get a certain grade after three or four years. That may not happen. Long-term goals are products of short-term goals. And short-term goals are products of simple things that you do every day. It, therefore, implies that you need to write down a number of things that you must be doing every day or every week in order to remain on track. It could be as simple as attending all lectures. Also, remember to set the grades that you aim at scoring every semester.
Make sure that your goals are realistic.
Be real. Don’t write down dreams for the sake of writing them. Aim for something that is achievable. For example, it would be unrealistic to set your target to be an A yet the highest you have ever achieved is a D. Set a target that you can be able to achieve. By doing so it will help you avoid frustrations that many students go through because of setting targets that are too high. Whenever you set a target that is realistic you are likely to achieve it and when you do that you will be inspired to continue doing what you are doing.
Create a timetable.
Now that you have set realistic goals both long-term and short term and you already know your study style, the next step is to create a workable timetable. A workable timetable is the one that you will be able to follow. Again when creating a timetable, be realistic. Don’t create it for impressing people yet you will not follow it.
Designate a study area.
Have a good study area that aligns with your study style. If you are living within the campus, you may consider the library or other cool and quiet places. Avoid places with destructions. Also ensure that the area that you choose is comfortable in terms of lighting, chairs and the table. You cannot study effectively if you are studying in a room that is uncomfortable.
Understand the art of taking note.
Again, this depends on the kind of study technique that is effective for you. But whichever the style you use, it is important that you get to understand there is a difference between taking notes and transcribing. Taking note is not the same as copy and pasting. It, therefore, means that you need to understand the art of taking note which is basically noting down what you understood and not everything.
Review your notes regularly.
Do not take notes and stop there. You need to constantly go back and read the notes. It will ensure that the content you learned stick into your mind. Otherwise, you will end up forgetting everything that you learned a few days ago. Therefore keep going back to your notes to keep them fresh in your mind.
Exercise and get good sleep.
Work without play makes John a dull boy. Therefore don’t spend all your time in school in the library. Get in the field with other students and engage in sports and other activities that will make your body engage in exercise. Playing will help your mind to clear up and you will be fresh when you go back to study. On the same point, sleep enough and comfortably. It will ensure that your mind is fresh and ready to learn in the morning.
Track the progress.
After you have executed all the steps, don’t stay back and think that you will succeed academically. You need to check your performance constantly to see whether there is progress or not. If there is good progress then continue with the study routine. But is it is not working, go back to the drawing board and ask yourself the areas that are dragging you down. Try to change them and track the progress to see if there is an improvement. Make changes on the routine until you get the most effective.
