The pros/cons of living on campus.

Most of the universities and colleges offer hostels where the students can live comfortably in the course of the semester. Many students opt to live on-campus because they consider it to be convenient and fun. But before deciding to live on-campus, let me enlighten you on a number of things that you should consider;

Pros of living on-campus.

  • It offers a learning environment- When you live in hostels, you are in the midst of people whom you share the same goal which is education. Being surrounded by people with the same mindset or goals is enough to make one focus on education as compared to the one living off-campus. You are surrounded by the school environment such as classes that always makes your mind remember what took you to college.
  • Ease access to learning amenities- One of the most important learning amenities in any university or college is the library. And when you live on-campus, it enables you to access it 24/7. There is no limitation of time because it’s within a walking distance. It is also worth noting that it’s also easy to consult various instructors or professors because you can spot them around as they move from one class to another.
  • Services are provided- Most of the students hate to cook. Well, if you are one of those that don’t like cooking, then on-campus is ideal for you. Students are provided with three hot meals per day and therefore there is no need to cook. There are also other services provided such as cleaning of the dormitories as well as washrooms. All you have to do is study and relax. That sound cool right?
  • Ease to network- Living on-campus offers you an opportunity to make friends that you will remain in contact for long if not for the rest of your life. The number of friends that one can make is also high. These students take different courses and thus after some years you will end up having different professionals in your circle of friend which will help you connect easily with other professionals in the course of your career.

Cons of living on-campus.

  • There are rules and regulations- It is one of the limitations of living in hostels that pisses many students. There are so many rules that one is supposed to adhere to all the time. As much as these rules are meant to make life to be smooth for all the students, they end up making life to be boring and full of pressure. And don’t forget, this is the age where the students want some sort of freedom.
  • Lack of flexibly- It mainly relate to the time of eating. When you choose to live on-campus, you have a meal timetable that you must follow or else you will sleep hungry. There is time allocated for breakfast, lunch, and supper and all students are supposed to go by the timetable. In other words, when you choose to live in the hostels, you are dictated when to eat. And that sucks.
  • Small rooms- colleges or universities have been designed to offer you education and not comfort. That is why when it comes to hostels, they are small fitting only a bed and a study table. If you are used to a fully furnished master bedroom then hostel life will be hard on you. To make it even worse, these rooms you are supposed to share with someone else. It is something that makes many people hate living on-campus.
  • Bad roommates- It is the worst thing that could happen to you while living in hostels. You could be allocated a room with someone whom you are not compatible. Sometimes a roommate could even be a thief such that when you leave your phone or laptop in the room you will not find it when you come back. He could be even be taking drugs and may end up introducing you into the world of drugs. Sometimes it could be a simple personality difference between the two of you. But whichever the case, it makes living on-campus to be hell for many students.
  • It is expensive- I previously talked about services such as cooking and cleaning that are offered to those living on-campus. Well, those services don’t come free. They are included in the fee that one is supposed to pay. It is estimated that on average, living on-campus cost a student between $7,500 and $9,000 per year. The cost is even much higher for private students. Such a high cost of living on-campus forces many students to rent rooms outside.
  • There is no privacy- If you love privacy then living on-campus is not your thing. There is absolutely no privacy; from living with a roommate to using a communal bathroom. It is very hard to have a moment alone when living on-campus.
